Benzphetamine (benz-FET-a-meen) or otherwise known as Didrex, is an appetite suppressant drug that has been approved by the FDA to encourage weight loss for people suffering from obesity. It is a prescription drug and is only allowed for short term uses (usually around 8-12 weeks). Didrex is like Hoodia or Phentermine where it reduces one’s appetite before every meal. This will obviously decrease the amount of calories the individual eats during the day. When used along with diet, exercise, and behavior therapy the results have shown that people have had some short-term weight loss.

Didrex reduces your appetite by acting on the satiety center in the brain (the part that controls appetite). It also stimulates your central nervous system and increases your heart rate and blood pressure.

Its chemical makeup is very similar to amphetamine. Amphetamine is known to produce increased wakefulness, help one’s focus, and decrease fatigue & appetite. Since it does help in one’s focus Didrex has also been used for the treatment of narcolepsy, ADHD (Attention Deficit disorder with Hyperactivity), abnormal behavioral syndrome in children, and depression.

Much research has been done with Didrex and has been very well documented, but there is a handful of unpleasant side effects. Taking it can be irritating for some or sometimes even dangerous to others.

Some of the side effects of this drug are anxiety or nervousness, palpitations (people thinking they’re having a heart attack), diarrhea or constipation, dry mouth or an unpleasant taste in the mouth, headache or dizziness, a changes in their sex drive (altered libido), insomnia , restlessness or tremor, infrequent bowel movements and constipation.

Some of the symptoms of overdose may include restlessness, tremor, rapid breathing, confusion, hallucinations, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps.

Didrex is a known stimulant and can be habit-forming. Amphetamine can be highly addictive and there have been known cases where one can become physically or psychologically dependent on this medication. It is highly recommended that one does not exceed the recommended dose or take this medicine for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor. Exceeding the recommended dose or taking this medicine longer than prescribed may cause serious side effects. If you take Didrex several weeks in a row and stop suddenly, you may have withdrawal symptoms.

If the consumer has anxiety attacks, or have abused drugs in the past, they may not be prescribed Didrex.
